Apple, Inc., known for its flagship product, the iPhone, is now exploring the world of robotics as it looks for its next big thing. According to Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman, the company is considering launching a series of products based on robotics after shelving its self-driving car project. The technology developed for the car project could be applied to other areas, particularly in generative artificial intelligence.
Gurman revealed that Apple is in the process of developing various robotic devices, starting with a tabletop device codenamed J595, expected to have a large display and cameras with a robotic actuator. In the long term, the company may also explore mobile robots and humanoid models. Apple’s robot project is led by Kevin Lynch, who previously worked on the car project, along with the company’s AI chief, and top robotics experts have been hired from places like Technion in Israel.
Apple aims to solve first-world problems with its robotics technology, such as reaching out to devices in another room, taking photos, launching videoconferencing sessions, or performing household chores. Gurman highlighted the potential of attaching a robotic limb to an iPad for improved functionality. Although the project faces challenges like cost and technical limitations, Apple’s expertise in hardware engineering, AI technology, and mapping could help overcome these obstacles.
By investing in robotics, Apple hopes to make a mark in the smart home market and differentiate itself from competitors like Amazon and Google. The company sees an opportunity to leverage the talent and expertise from its previously shelved car project to drive innovation in the robotics space. While there are uncertainties and challenges ahead, Apple insiders believe that robotics could be the key to further integrating technology into consumers’ lives and expanding the company’s product offerings.
